Robert Morden was a prominent late seventeenth-century English cartographer and globemaker best known for his series of county maps produced for Camdens Britannia in 1695 and subsequent editions in the early eighteenth century. These maps were engraved on copper plates and were distinguished by their inclusion of local roads, geographical features, and decorative title cartouches.

Eighteenth-century maps were traditionally printed on handmade rag paper using copperplate engravings. The printed monochrome impressions were often subsequently hand-coloured using watercolor washes to delineate parish boundaries, rivers, and regional borders.

Authentic period maps display a visible plate mark indented into the paper around the border where the copper plate pressed into the sheet. Additionally, genuine pieces show characteristic laid paper watermarks, chain lines, and subtle age-related toning or foxing.

Antique maps are frequently styled as central focal points above sideboards, desks, or mantelpieces, often framed with dark or gilded mouldings that contrast against contemporary paint palettes. Grouping multiple regional maps together creates an engaging gallery wall in hallways or study rooms.
