Description

A superb Japanese Satsuma vase, Meiji period, c.1890–1900, of elegant baluster form, featuring an intricately detailed domestic family scene with mother, father, and child surrounded by traditional tea implements and porcelain vessels. This richly composed tableau is executed in fine polychrome enamel and lavish raised gilt, with meticulous application of individual gold dots—a hallmark of high-tier Kyoto workmanship.

The decorative technique closely parallels those employed by Yabu Meizan and his school, particularly the use of minute gilded elements to articulate textile folds, hair strands, and ceramic glazes within the painted scene. The pictorial composition extends around the body, framed by formal borders with stylised brocade patterns and trailing foliage.

The base bears a crisply impressed Shimazu mon (family crest) and a rectangular gilt mark in reserve. The latter is currently under review; it likely denotes a Kyoto workshop active in the late Meiji era.

A fine example of Kyoto Satsuma, marrying decorative richness with a touching human theme. Museum-grade in technique and concept, highly collectable and ideal for refined interior display.
