Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A cushion mirror, originally developed in the 17th century and widely revived in the Victorian period, features an angled or raised outer section surrounding the central glass. This outer frame often holds secondary mirror plates or detailed repousse metal cladding to catch light from multiple angles.

These mirrors typically consist of thin sheets of brass that have been stamped or hand-hammered with decorative motifs (repousse work). The brass sheet is subsequently wrapped around a solid timber core frame for structural support, housing bevelled or flat silvered glass panels.

Authentic pieces generally display minor oxidisation and tarnish on the brass surface, alongside evidence of manual assembly such as copper rivets or small nails securing the metal to the wooden backing. The backboards are usually dark, aged softwood or oak rather than modern plywood or MDF.

A Victorian brass mirror works effectively as a focal point above a fireplace mantel, a hallway console table, or paired with contemporary minimalist furniture to create visual contrast. The rich tone of the metallic finish complements both dark, moody paint shades and neutral, light-toned walls.

Dust the brass cladding regularly using a soft, dry microfibre cloth, taking care around intricate relief work. Avoid harsh abrasive polishes or chemical metal cleaners that can remove the historical patina or seep behind the glass to damage the silvering.
