Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

John Speed was a prominent English cartographer who published The Theatre of the Empire of Great Britaine in 1611. His maps were groundbreaking for incorporating detailed inset town plans, decorative heraldic crests, and geographical features etched via engraved copper plates.

Maps from this era were printed from hand-engraved copper plates onto handmade rag paper using a rolling press. The printed black ink outlines were subsequently coloured by hand using watercolour washes to distinguish regional boundaries and decorative cartouches.

Authentic period maps exhibit a distinct plate mark impression around the border where the copper plate pressed into the paper. Additionally, genuine examples feature a central fold line from original atlas binding, chain lines within rag paper, and period Latin or English text printed on the reverse.

A framed antique map functions effectively as a focal point above a console table, desk, or mantelpiece. It pairs well with traditional timber furnishings, brass accents, and dark neutral wall palettes to complement classic cartographic aesthetics.

To prevent fading and paper degradation, hang framed maps away from direct sunlight and sources of heat or humidity. Utilize UV-protective glass and acid-free archival mounting materials to shield the paper and original pigments over time.
