This Antique French Oak Winder Easel c1890 is a quintessential piece of "Atelier" (studio) equipment .

While standard easels used simple pegs or notches, a winder (or crank) easel was the premium professional choice, designed to handle the immense weight of large-scale oil canvases.

The handle operates a winding system. This allowed a 19th-century artist to raise or lower a heavy, wet canvas.

French Oak was preferred for studio furniture because of its incredible density and resistance to warping.

The fantastic colour serves as a visual history of the artists who once used the tool and is ready for those who will continue to.
