19th Century Victorian Period Burr Walnut Centre Table, C1850

19th century
Description

Very Fine & Elegant Mid 19th-Century Victorian Burr Walnut Carved Centre Table

A superb example of mid 19th century English craftsmanship, this very fine Victorian burr walnut carved centre table combines exceptional quality, striking design and real decorative presence. Dating from 1850, the table features a beautifully shaped top in richly figured burr walnut, displaying wonderfully vivid grain patterns. The surface is framed with refined rosewood crossbanding and a carved moulded edge, all resting on an impressive solid walnut, basket shaped “birdcage” base. The base stands on elegantly shaped legs with finely carved details, each terminating in the original brass castors. The table also retains its original carved finials, both to the top and the lower stretcher, a mark of its completeness and quality. The colour and patina are entirely original, with a warm, characterful glow that only well preserved period furniture acquires over time. Structurally sound and in excellent original condition, this is a top quality piece throughout.

This versatile table works equally well as a centre table in an entrance hall, a small dining or breakfast table, or a statement occasional table in a sitting room, library or study. Its generous, practical surface makes it ideal for displaying lamps, books, objets d’art or floral arrangements, while its sculptural base ensures it is as beautiful from every angle as it is useful.

Combining originality, elegance and function, this Victorian burr walnut centre table is a true statement piece for any interior that values fine 19th century craftsmanship and timeless style.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Victorian centre tables were designed as decorative focal points for drawing rooms or parlours, often featuring elaborate wood veneers, intricate floral marquetry, and carved pedestals or legs.

Craftsmen utilised solid walnut timber alongside decorative burr walnut veneers, frequently incorporating boxwood floral marquetry, hand-carved scroll detailing, and concealed brass castors.

Authentic period pieces feature hand-cut marquetry inlays, natural wood grain variation, age-appropriate timber shrinkage on the underside, and period-correct brass castors.

A Victorian walnut centre table works as a statement piece in an entrance hall or bay window, contrasting warm timber tones with light contemporary walls and modern upholstery.

Preserve the natural finish by applying high-grade beeswax polish periodically, keeping the table away from direct sunlight or heat sources, and dusting regularly with a dry cloth.
