Description

This is very rare, believed to be one of ten produced by Antonio Borsato at his studio in Milan, Italy, and signed on the base. The piece is stamped Made in Italy 37 which we believe is the date mark. It is part of a series of stations of the cross produced by Borsato, this being the Thirteenth Station and the rarest of all. It depicts Jesus be taken from the cross after his crucifixion. The Piece is in excellent condition for its 80+ years with only very minor blemishes, (small missing leaves etc) the main structure is fault free, and a rare find. Please study the photos to understand the incredible detail of this work, and if you need any further information please don't hesitate to get in touch.

Measurements are 65cm High x 49cm Wide x 40cm Deep.

Antonio Borsato was a prominent 20th-century Italian sculptor known for creating highly complex, hand-modelled porcelain figures and groups in Milan. His work reflects classical Italian ceramic traditions, often depicting religious scenes, historical events, and genre subjects in the Capodimonte tradition with hand-painted polychrome finishes.

Mid-century Italian studio figurines were typically cast from fine hard-paste or soft-paste porcelain slip before being hand-carved and assembled. After an initial firing, details were hand-painted using mineral glazes and enamels, followed by subsequent kiln firings to set the soft colouration.

Authentic Borsato porcelain works feature an incised or painted artist signature along the lower base or edge. Original pieces also frequently bear a crowned N mark or makers stamp, accompanied by edition numbers or model marks incised into the clay prior to firing.
