Fine Edwardian Satinwood Painted Side Cabinet with Neo-classical Decoration

1900 - 1920
Description

A refined Edwardian satinwood side cabinet, beautifully decorated with hand-painted neo-classical panels depicting elegant female figures within oval reserves. The cabinet is enriched with further painted floral and foliate ornament throughout, all set against a warm satinwood ground that displays excellent colour and patina.

The piece is fitted with two panelled doors opening to reveal a shelved interior, offering practical storage while retaining its decorative appeal. Above sits a single long drawer, and the cabinet is finished with a shaped glazed top, adding a further layer of refinement and protection.

Raised on slender turned legs, the proportions are well balanced, making this cabinet ideal for use in a dining room, hallway, drawing room, or bedroom setting. Its light tone and painted decoration allow it to sit comfortably in both traditional and contemporary interiors.

Elegant, decorative, and highly versatile, this is a strong example of Edwardian painted furniture with clear neo-classical influence.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Edwardian revival furniture frequently drew inspiration from late eighteenth-century Sheraton and Hepplewhite designs, combining light-coloured timbers with hand-painted floral swags, ribbon bow motifs, and classical portrait medallions.

These cabinets were constructed using satinwood veneers over solid oak or pine frameworks, complemented by hand-applied oil paint decorations and clear protective varnish finishes.

Authentic pieces exhibit hand-painted detail with visible brush strokes rather than printed stencils, period-appropriate joinery such as hand-cut dovetails, and natural timber oxidation beneath clear lacquers.

Positioning the cabinet as a standalone focal piece in an entryway, hallway, or living room allows the detailed polychrome artwork to contrast against neutral walls and contemporary soft furnishings.

Dust regularly using a soft, dry microfibre cloth, avoid placing the item in direct sunlight to prevent timber fading, and maintain stable indoor humidity to prevent veneer movement.
