Antique Persian Rasht Embroidery of Fine Classic Design, Silk & Felt Applique Work, Circa 1880.

19th century
Description

Size: 4ft 11in x 4ft 3in (150 x 130cm).

Antique Persian Rasht embroidery in silk with felt applique work.

Circa 1880.

This outstanding example has a fine classical design and great detail, a beautiful example of type.

Woven in the city of Rasht in Northern Persia on the Black Sea coast, known as Rashti-Duzis they are famed for their intricately embroidered details and borders.

Christies auction house writes as follows: 'From the Safavid period onwards, the city of Rasht in Persia supplied the Safavid courts at Ardebil and Tabriz with highly sophisticated embroideries, known as rasht-duzi textiles. They were executed primarily by professional male embroiderers in well-established workshops, and in the Qajar period served as saddle covers, floor covers and hangings within impressive courtly tents (Wearden, 1991, p.122).

The gul-duzi-i-rasht (stitched inlay) technique was complex and entailed cutting a shape out of the ground fabric and replacing it with a carefully cut fabric of the same shape in a contrasting colour. In order to establish the necessary precision of each piece, Wearden suggests that a sharp instrument was used, much like a biscuit cutter, before the joins were disguised by fine embroidery which also served to refine the details of the design (Wearden, 1991, p.121).

The designs are clearly inspired by Persian medallion carpets. Further Rasht textiles of a medallion design include one housed in the Museum der Kulturen Basel, published in HALI, no.143, 2005, p.114, and one sold at Christie’s, New York, 14-15 December 2015, lot 643'.

The embroidery is in good original condition with no repairs. The are some historic signs of use and wear, the textile has a very old feel and is delicate. This textile would make a great wall hanging or could be used as a cover.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Rasht embroidery, also known as Resht work, is a traditional Iranian textile art originating from the Gilan province during the Qajar period, characterised by intricate silk chain-stitch embroidery worked onto wool felt backgrounds.

Traditional pieces are constructed using heavy felted wool cloth known as jokhan, decorated with polychrome silk threads and inlaid or applique wool patches secured with dense chain stitching.

Authentic 19th-century examples feature hand-stitched silk thread work, natural dyestuffs showing slight tonal variations, precise geometric or floral lattice arrangements, and hand-cut felt inlaid pieces rather than machine-manufactured elements.

These textiles can be mounted on padded boards or framed behind protective glass to serve as wall art above sideboards, consoles, or bedheads to add historical texture to a room scheme.

Keep the textile out of direct sunlight and high humidity environments. Cleanliness should be maintained strictly through specialist textile conservators using non-invasive conservation methods.
