Framed and signed oil on canvas by Nina Colmore MBE (1889-1973) of a bay racehorse. The painting is dated 1936 and inscribed with the horse''s name and is mounted in an attractive gilt frame of the period. The canvas has had a recent clean. Provenance: By descent in the family of George Beeby, thrice trainer of Cheltenham Gold Cup winners.
Colmore was a painter of sports and animals, specialising in equestrian subjects. She was born in Houndslow, Middlesex, as Nina Murray, daughter of Colonel Gostling Murray and his wife, an amateur artist. She studied at Heatherley''s School of Fine Art with Henry Massey, in Paris at the Académie Julian and in several studios. She exhibited at the Paris Salon, winning a diploma, and in London with the New English Art Club. Her patrons included: HRH The Maharajah of Jaipur, HRH the Prince Ali Khan and the Duchess of Westminster. She travelled extensively, driving a mobile canteen in the Middle East during WWI, and later in life drove across Afric...a. She lived near Andover, Hampshire. Her work is included in the Public Catalogue Foundation. (Source - British Museum).
