British Flintlock Blunderbuss with Sprung Bayonet, Late 18th Century

Description

A rare and intriguing defensive firearm from the late Georgian period, featuring a sprung triangular bayonet mounted above the barrel with and ram rod below and vacant escutcheon.

The 36.5 cm (approx. 14½?) brass barrel flares at the muzzle and tapers to a short octagonal breech section, with a sprung 28 cm triangular bayonet above the barrel. The bayonet is retained by a catch and releases forward when deployed — a characteristic feature of close-quarters blunderbusses intended for shipboard or carriage defence.

The flintlock action incorporates a roller on the frizzen and remains complete, although unsigned, consistent with government inspection pieces and private contract manufacture of the late 18th century. The furniture comprises an engraved brass trigger guard with pineapple finial and brass butt plate.

Walnut Stock with cross hatched grip, shows age-appropriate wear, shrinkage cracks, and period restoration/repairs, particularly around the wrist and forend. There is evidence of old glue work and filling, but no modern replacements; all metal components are original and retain appropriate patina.

The bayonet and barrel are marked with British proof and inspection stamps, including repeated Crown over Crossed Sceptres — indicative of British proofing standards of the era.

Overall length approximately 75 cm (29½?). A noteworthy and scarce example of a late-18th-century British blunderbuss with integral bayonet, desirable to collectors of Georgian firearms and naval weaponry.

A blunderbuss is a short, large-calibre firearm characterised by a flared muzzle designed to scatter shot at close range. Introduced in the seventeenth century and used extensively through the eighteenth century, it was favoured for naval boarding defence, carriage protection, and self-defence in confined spaces.

These firearms were predominantly constructed using dense hardwoods such as walnut for the stock, iron or steel for the lock and spring mechanisms, and cast brass or wrought iron for the barrel and fittings to withstand heavy black powder charges.

Authentic pieces generally display period British proof marks on the barrel, a hand-forged steel lock mechanism, age-appropriate wear and patination on the brass or iron, and original features such as folding sprung bayonets or wooden ramrods.

Antique firearms are frequently mounted on wooden display plaques, placed inside custom glazed cabinets, or hung directly above mantelpieces and sideboards in traditional, library, or study spaces as historical focal points.
