Description

A decorative English charger plate in Patent Ironstone China by Mason’s, dating from the early 20th century. The plate features a rich orange ground with a stylised exotic bird in deep cobalt blue highlighted with gilding, set within dense floral decoration. Transfer printing is enhanced with hand-applied enamels and gilding, giving the surface depth and visual impact. The gently scalloped rim with gilt edge reflects the quality of Mason’s Edwardian display wares, circa 1915.

The pattern derives from late Victorian Mason’s designs influenced by Japanese art and decorative imports. Charger plates of this type were intended as presentation pieces rather than for everyday use.

The base bears the Mason’s Patent Ironstone mark, the registered design number Rd No 652974 (British Registered Design system, Board of Trade), and a small handwritten factory reference “c. 1870”.

Dimensions and weight: diameter 26.8 cm, height 3 cm, weight 552 g.

Condition: ideal condition, with no damage or restoration observed.

Patented in Staffordshire in 1813 by Charles James Mason, ironstone was developed as an economical, highly durable alternative to imported Chinese porcelain. Masons produced vast quantities of tableware and decorative items featuring oriental-inspired Chinoiserie patterns and hand-enamelled details.

Ironstone is a dense, hard earthenware made with slag, flint, Cornwall stone, and clay fired at high temperatures. Decorative chargers were typically transfer-printed with cobalt blue or black outlines, then hand-painted with coloured enamels and finished with gilt highlights before a final glaze firing.

Authentic pieces feature a heavy, dense body that rings clearly when tapped gently. They usually bear an impressed or printed makers mark on the underside incorporating the words Masons Patent Ironstone China, often alongside pattern numbers or crown motifs.

A decorative ironstone charger can be mounted on a wall using a plate hanger, displayed upright on a wooden plate stand on a sideboard top, or integrated into a gallery wall arrangement alongside framed art and brass accents.
