Kinkozan Kyoto Satsuma Vase, Cobalt Blue & Gilt Birds, C.1895 (meiji)

£1,500    $2,004    €1,754
Kinkozan Kyoto Satsuma vase, made circa 1895 in the Meiji era, in the highly desirable cobalt-blue and gold palette associated with the Kinkozan workshops. Despite its compact scale, it has the “high luxury” look collectors want: a deep, glassy blue ground carrying crisp gilt chrysanthemum heads and reserves painted with birds among blossom, all set off by dense moriage pointillism that gives the surface a subtle, tactile sparkle.

The pictorial reserves show finely observed birds perched and in flight among flowering branches, painted with careful modulation and a confident line. The background is worked with minute raised dots (moriage/shot enamel effect), a time-consuming technique that signals a higher-grade workshop piece rather than mass export ware.

Mark to base: a square iron-red seal with gilt characters reading ???? (Kinkozan zo), literally “made by Kinkozan”. The seal form, palette and finish sit well with late-19th-century Kyoto Satsuma production, circa 1890s.
