Herbert Royle "A Wharfedale Haytime" Oil on Canvas

Description

Herbert Royle (1870-1958) was a British landscape painter, born in Patricroft, Lancashire. He trained at the Harris Institute in Preston and Southport school of art under John William Buxton Knight. He exhibited extensively at the Walker gallery, Liverpool, Manchester city art gallery, Royal Academy and at other Galleries and Exhibitions throughout the Country. From 1924 onwards he lived at the Manor House in the hamlet of Nesfield, near Ilkley, where he also had a studio on the hillside above the house. Some of his finest work was painted in this area around his home in Wharfedale.4

"A Wharfedale Haytime" is a good large example. Dating from his best period when he lived at Nesfield, this oil painting on canvas measures 31" x 41" and is signed lower right. It is framed in a gilt frame giving an overall size of 39"x 48".
