Peter Harris Clocks & Militaria has dated this Silver Hilted Smallsword Dagger to the 18th Century.

Description
The hilt is of elegant Rococo character, comprising an urn-shaped faceted pommel of solid silver, a solid silver grip, and a finely worked guard with knuckle bow and dished shell. The grip is tightly bound with finely twisted original silver wire, laid in a continuous chevron pattern over a wooden core, showing even compression and wear consistent with age and long use.

The guard was originally of double-shell smallsword form. One shell has been removed and the quillon and knuckle bow subtly reduced, the work displaying softened edges, uniform patina, and careful finishing throughout, all consistent with late 18th- or early 19th-century reworking. The remaining shell is deeply dished with flowing Rococo scroll outlines.

The blade has been shortened and re-profiled in period, almost certainly from a longer smallsword blade, creating a stiff, narrow thrusting weapon suited to close-quarters or urban use. Such conversions are well documented during the French Revolutionary and Napoleonic periods, when obsolete smallswords were frequently adapted rather than discarded.

Condition
Good original condition throughout. The silver hilt and grip retain an attractive aged patina, with no evidence of modern polishing, re-wrapping, soldering, or reconstruction. The blade shortening and guard reduction are coherent, early, and historically credible.

Notes on Attribution
The Rococo styling, pommel form, and quality of the silver grip and wire binding point strongly to French or northern Italian manufacture, rather than British. The later conversion is convincingly of Revolutionary or Napoleonic date.

Collecting Interest
While unaltered smallswords command higher prices, period-converted examples of this quality are increasingly sought after, as they illustrate the transition from court sword to practical personal sidearm. The retention of the original silver hilt and grip adds significantly to both interest and value.
