Description

An attractive English Staffordshire pearlware jug of the late Georgian to early Victorian period, circa 1825–1840. Baluster in form with softly faceted sides, a scalloped rim and a shaped foot, it is decorated with a purple transfer-printed pastoral allegorical scene, enhanced with hand colouring, showing a standing female figure and a reclining semi-draped companion after French galant engravings.

The rim is detailed with pink/copper lustre banding, complemented by hand-painted overglaze enamel borders in pink-lilac tones. The combination of transfer printing, hand colouring and selective lustre highlights is typical of Staffordshire production in the 1820s–1830s. Unmarked, as expected.

A decorative and collectible jug with pleasing form, clear transferwork and well-preserved lustre accents.

Staffordshire pearlware is a refined white earthenware introduced in the late eighteenth century, featuring a lead glaze tinted with cobalt to give a cooler, whiter appearance similar to porcelain. Lustre decoration involves applying a thin metallic film, such as copper, gold, or platinum, over the glaze to create an iridescent finish.

These vessels were formed from white earthenware clay and fired before being coated in a cobalt-tinted glaze. Decorative patterns were applied using copperplate transfer printing, over-painted enameled details, and metallic oxide glazes fired at lower temperatures to achieve the signature lustre effect.

Authentic pearlware often displays subtle blue pooling of the cobalt glaze in crevices, joints, and around the foot rim. Original pieces feature hand-applied details over transfer prints, soft wear under the base, and characteristic moulding techniques typical of early Staffordshire potteries.
