Flight, Barr & Barr Worcester Porcelain Tea Cup and Saucer, “Two Quail”, C. 1807–1813

18th century
For Sale by Ritas Bazaar
Description

An elegant Worcester porcelain tea cup and saucer by Flight, Barr & Barr, decorated in the well-known oriental “Two Quail” pattern, inspired by Kangxi-period Chinese porcelain and Japanese Arita wares. The paired quails symbolise harmony and abundance, rendered here with a bright white ground and restrained enamel colours.

The decoration is fully hand-painted, with excellent preservation of enamels. The porcelain body is dense and cool white, finished with a smooth transparent glaze typical of Worcester’s finest early 19th-century output. The saucer’s softly undulating rim complements the cup, creating a refined ensemble.

The FBB mark dates the piece securely to 1807–1813, the firm’s most accomplished period, when Flight, Barr & Barr held royal patronage as suppliers to King George III.

This tea pair retains its original label from the 2004 Loan Exhibition curated by Dr G. Girton, confirming its exhibition at Stockspring Antiques, London, and later at The Museum of Worcester Porcelain.

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Flight, Barr & Barr Worcester porcelain from the Regency era is recognised for fine soft-paste porcelain and bone china decorated with hand-painted enamels, gilded accents, and orientalist motifs inspired by Asian ceramics.

Nineteenth-century English teacups and saucers were composed of soft-paste porcelain or early bone china made from refined clay and bone ash, decorated with overglaze enamel paints and liquid gold leaf.

Authentic Regency Worcester porcelain frequently displays impressed or painted manufacturer marks under the base, such as FBB beneath a crown, as well as translucent paste, hand-applied enamel decoration, and distinct period handle shapes.

Antique porcelain teacups and saucers can be arranged inside glass-fronted cabinets, displayed on floating shelves alongside reference books, or positioned on decorative trays atop sideboards.

Antique porcelain should be washed gently by hand using lukewarm water, mild detergent, and a non-abrasive soft cloth. Dishwashers and chemical cleansers must be avoided to prevent damage to gilding and enamel finishes.
