Archival Detail
Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A bombe bureau is a writing desk featuring a characteristic outward-curving lower section and a sloping fall-front lid. Popularised during the 18th century, particularly in Dutch and Continental furniture design, these pieces feature intricate floral marquetry constructed using contrasting wood veneers inlaid into a primary timber carcass.

18th-century bureaux were typically constructed using solid timber frames faced with burr walnut or mahogany veneers. Marquetry details were executed using various coloured hardwoods and fruitwoods, while drawer linings were crafted from oak or pine with hand-cut dovetail joints.

Authentic 18th-century examples display signs of hand-sawing on drawer bases, irregular hand-cut dovetails, and cast brass handles secured with period-correct fittings. Examining the underside and back panels reveals hand-planed timber and natural shrinkage along wood grain lines.

A decorative marquetry bureau serves as a focal point in a home office, hallway, or living space. Positioning the piece against a neutral backdrop balances the visual complexity of the inlaid motifs while offering functional storage and a compact workspace.

Maintain the finish by dusting with a dry microfibre cloth and applying a high-quality beeswax paste once or twice a year in the direction of the grain. Keep the bureau away from direct heat sources and direct sunlight to prevent veneer lifting or pigment fading.
