Set of 8 George IV Period Mahogany Dining Chairs, C1830

19th century
Description

Handsome Set of Eight (6+2) George IV Period Mahogany Dining Chairs

A handsome set of eight antique solid mahogany dining chairs in the classic Chippendale style, dating from around 1830 and comprising two armchairs and six single chairs. The quality is excellent, and the design particularly attractive. The backs are pierced with fine fretwork, and the legs are double stretchered for extra stability. All chairs have drop-in upholstered seats, with the two carvers matching the six singles. The mahogany has a gorgeous colour and patina, and the original polish finish has been retained.

Each chair features a shaped and carved top rail with moulded uprights and a pierced, carved central splat; the armchairs also have shaped and moulded arms. This leads down to drop-in upholstered seats in a neutral fabric, currently in good condition (and easily re-upholstered in a fabric of choice if desired). The chairs stand on square moulded front legs with shaped corner brackets at the top, joined by a double H-stretcher, with splayed back legs.

The seat height is 48 cm. Generously proportioned, these chairs offer both comfort and aesthetic appeal, retaining their original colour and patina to the frames and ensuring they stand out in any setting.

In good condition and crafted in England circa 1830, this set of dining chairs is not only highly functional but also a superb representation of late Georgian design.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

George IV furniture, dating from 1820 to 1830, bridges late Regency classical proportions with transitional Revivalist elements, often incorporating dark mahogany construction and intricate hand-carved back splats.

High-grade mahogany was the primary timber choice due to its durability and rich grain, paired with mortise and tenon joinery and drop-in upholstered seats.

Look for hand-carved pierced splats, solid mahogany frames displaying historical patination, original pegged joinery, and evidence of hand-tool marks on the underside of the seat rails.

Pairing a set of dark mahogany chairs with a contemporary minimalist dining table creates a clear contrast between traditional craft and modern lines.

Dust regularly with a dry cloth and apply a natural beeswax polish annually to protect the original finish, ensuring the timber remains away from direct heat sources to prevent shrinkage.
