Meissen Sugar Bowl with Cover, Early Marcolini Period, C.1774

18th century
Description

A late Rococo Meissen porcelain sugar bowl with cover, produced in 1774 at the beginning of the Marcolini period. The compact form and refined proportions are typical of Meissen table wares of this sophisticated era.

The bowl is decorated with Watteau-style fêtes galantes scenes, depicting elegant figures within pastoral garden landscapes, painted with lightness and restraint. The cover is surmounted by a rosebud finial (Rosenknospenknauf) and decorated en suite. The base bears the underglaze blue crossed swords mark.

During the 1770s Meissen continued to set the standard for European porcelain, producing table wares for aristocratic use that combined technical excellence with refined Rococo taste.
