A signed Kinkozan Kyoto Satsuma bowl, circa 1880, offered in outstanding condition. The piece is defined by a powerful contrast: a deep cobalt-blue exterior carrying dense gilt foliage, and an ivory interior with fine crackle that sits naturally for early Kyoto Satsuma.

This is not simply rich gilding, but controlled gilding. The lines remain clean, the edges sharp and the pattern balanced around the curve, holding its structure even under close inspection. The result is a composed, high-art surface rather than decorative excess.

Marked to the base with a gilt square seal in seal-script, read as ??? (Kinkozan).

Satsuma pottery originated in the Satsuma province of southern Kyushu, Japan, during the late sixteenth century. The style evolved significantly during the Meiji period (18681912), adapting to Western demand with highly intricate enamelled and gilded decorations featuring figures, florals, and geometric patterns.

Satsuma ceramics are created using a fine earthenware body coated in a light ivory-coloured glaze that characteristically develops a fine network of crackle lines. Decorators applied multi-coloured enamels and raised gilding (moriage) before firing the piece a second time to set the detailed painted designs.

Authentic Meiji era Satsuma pieces often feature maker marks or signatures on the base, such as those of the Kinkozan studio. Look for extremely fine crackle glaze, crisp hand-painted enamel details, light weight relative to modern porcelain, and authentic signs of age such as minor wear to gilding rather than uniform modern printed transfers.
