Description

An impressive and finely worked brass floor lamp, distinguished by its richly pierced, tapering column and exceptional decorative detail. Classical mouldings and beaded accents articulate the shaft, which incorporates an adjustable column allowing for variation in height, and terminates in a slender stem designed to support a shade.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Floor lamps, historically referred to as standard lamps in the United Kingdom, gained widespread popularity in the late Victorian and Edwardian eras with the advent of domestic electricity. Craftsmen drew inspiration from Rococo and Classical motifs, producing cast brass bases with intricate scrolling and openwork designs to serve as functional decorative features in reception rooms.

Traditional standard lamps from the late 19th and early 20th centuries were constructed primarily from cast or spun brass, often weighted at the base with iron for stability. Decorative elements were created through sand-casting or lost-wax casting, accompanied by hand-chased surface details and paired with tailored fabric or silk shades.

Authentic period examples feature notable weight due to solid cast brass and internal counterweights, along with natural surface oxidisation in recessed areas. Look for original cast construction joins, threaded rod assemblies, and historic re-wiring paths rather than modern uniform pressings or lightweight alloys.

Position a standard lamp beside armchairs, sofas, or in unused room corners to introduce vertical proportion and warm ambient light. The metallic warmth of brass contrasts effectively against neutral walls, dark panelling, or saturated paint schemes, providing structural interest without cluttering floor space.

Maintain the brass finish by dusting regularly with a dry microfibre cloth. Avoid abrasive metal polishes if a natural aged patina is preferred, as harsh chemicals can strip protective lacquers. Ensure electrical components are inspected and tested by a qualified electrician to comply with current safety standards.
