Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A half tester bed is a style of bedstead originating in the late eighteenth and nineteenth centuries that features a partial canopy extending over the head section rather than the entire length of the bed. This framework allowed drapery to be hung behind and above the pillows to shield sleepers from draughts while taking up less visual space than a traditional four-poster bed.

Victorian examples were primarily crafted from fine hardwoods such as mahogany, walnut, or rosewood, often featuring solid frame construction with veneered panels. The upper canopy structure typically incorporates brass drapery rails and iron or wooden support frames.

Authentic nineteenth-century pieces feature hand-turned posts, mortise and tenon joinery, original brass castors, and period-correct iron bolt fittings securing the side rails. Look for natural age-related oxidisation in the wood timber and hand-cut dovetails on supporting framework components.

Balance the dark timber tone and substantial proportions of the bed by pairing it with crisp white or neutral linen bedding and light wall finishes. Modern or minimalist bedside lighting creates a tailored contrast against the traditional woodwork and canopy structure.

Dust the wooden surfaces regularly with a soft, dry microfibre cloth and apply a quality beeswax polish once or twice a year to nourish the timber and maintain the patina. Keep the furniture away from direct heat sources and high moisture to prevent timber shrinkage or veneer lifting.
