Antique Old Paris Tea Service in the Petit Style, C.1840

19th century
For Sale by Ritas Bazaar
Description

An attractive antique Old Paris porcelain tea service comprising four pieces: teapot, covered sugar bowl, milk jug and bonbon dish. Made during the Louis-Philippe I period, the service shows the revival of rocaille-inspired forms typical of Paris porcelain in the 1840s.

Decorated with a turquoise ground and floral panels associated with the Jacob Petit circle, the service is enhanced by fine gilding and light ornamental scrollwork. The decoration is balanced and well proportioned across all pieces.

All four pieces belong to the same matching set and form a coherent decorative ensemble.

A small underglaze pseudo-Sèvres stroke is present on the bases, used by Paris workshops as a quality indicator.

Dimensions:

Teapot with cover: height 16 cm; width from handle to spout 21.5 cm; depth 13 cm; weight 537 g

Sugar bowl with cover: height 13 cm; width 14.5 cm; depth 11.5 cm; weight 353 g

Milk jug: height 9.5 cm; width 12 cm; depth 8.5 cm; weight 164 g

Bonbon dish: height 7 cm; diameter 12.8 cm; weight 207 g

Condition:

Excellent antique condition throughout. The teapot, sugar bowl and bonbon dish show full preservation of enamel painting and gilding, with no cracks or restorations. The milk jug has a small, barely visible internal firing line; it is not visible externally. Gilding, including the delicate decoration on the spout, is exceptionally well preserved. The service appears to have been very little used.

Please study the accompanying photographs carefully as they form an integral part of this description. If you have any questions, we will be happy to answer them. The item will be shipped with full tracking and insurance. It is important to note that shipping costs include labour, packaging and postage.

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Old Paris porcelain, or Vieux Paris, refers to fine porcelain produced by independent artisan workshops and factories operating in and around Paris from the late 18th century through the 19th century.

These tea services were typically crafted from hard-paste porcelain, painted by hand with botanical motifs, and finished with hand-burnished gold leaf gilding.

Authentic pieces often feature unglazed bases, distinct hand-painted floral cartouches, elaborate gilding, and frequently lack factory makers marks, as many Parisian decorators worked independently.

Display the set on a dining room sideboard, inside a glass display cabinet, or arranged on a tray atop a console table to add historical interest.

Hand wash gently using warm water and a non-abrasive soap, avoiding harsh chemicals or dishwashers which can strip delicate enamelling and leaf gilding.
