Description

Although 19th century suzanis from Uzbekistan were made commercially, many of the best examples were made as dowry gifts. This beautiful piece may be one of those. Exceptionally well-crafted with very fine embroidery and silk quality, it has survived in excellent original condition and was clearly cherished through the generations. Woven in six panels on a cotton background, the small-scale floral field design, is framed by borders with repeating large scale flowers, fan-like ornaments and meandering leaves. It is a beautifully crafted design, elegant and luxuriant. The colouring is exquisite with liberal use of fuchsia, a lovely burnt orange, greens for the leaves, with touches of pink and light blue. Recently cleaned and relined, it is an outstanding work which is both highly decorative and collectible.

Suzanis are traditional hand-embroidered decorative textiles crafted across Central Asia, notably in Uzbekistan. Originating as bridal dowry pieces, these works feature botanical imagery designed to symbolise fertility, prosperity, and protection.

Traditional suzanis were created using hand-spun silk embroidery threads worked onto narrow strips of cotton or linen fabric. The stitching techniques predominantly include tambour hookwork, chain stitch, and couch stitch (basma) to fill large motif areas.

Authentic 19th-century suzanis typically consist of multiple narrow cloth panels stitched together longwise, as they were originally embroidered separately before assembly. Look for natural vegetable dye variation, visible faint ink layout lines beneath stitches, and slight irregularities inherent to hand craftsmanship.

An antique suzani can be professionally mounted on fabric and framed as a focal wall hanging above a console table or sofa. Alternatively, it can be draped over a headboard or used as a decorative coverlet to introduce color and pattern into neutral interior schemes.

Store and display suzanis away from direct sunlight and high humidity to prevent dye fading and fibre deterioration. Cleaning should only be undertaken by a professional textile conservator; routine dust removal can be executed by vacuuming through a fine mesh screen on low suction.
