Description

A very fine Chamberlain Worcester porcelain Armorial Crested Jug c.1795 - 1800. Of spiral fluted form, decorated with a yellow ground and gilding, the front decorated with a monogram 'JJ' in gold below a crest, probably that of Jenkins, Co. Salop.

Marked in gold script 'Chamberlains Worcester' to the base

Note: A similarly shaped jug painted with a view of Buildwas Abbey is illustrated in Geoffrey A. Godden, Chamberlain-Worcester Porcelain, 1788-1852, p. 91, fig. 98. 

Condition: Good with just a professionally restored crack to the side of the jug and base of the handle.

Chamberlain Worcester porcelain refers to fine ceramics manufactured by the factory established in Worcester, England, by Robert Chamberlain in the late 18th century. The factory became famous for detailed gilding, hand-painted enamelling, and customized armorial services for European aristocracy.

These jugs were crafted from soft-paste or hard-paste porcelain formulations, slip-cast or hand-moulded, and fired before glazing. Artisans then applied hand-painted enamel details, coat-of-arms crests, and burnished leaf gilding before a final low-temperature kiln firing.

Authentic pieces feature light age-related wear on hand-applied gilding, fine spiral fluting or spiralled moulding, and detailed enamel brushwork. While some examples bear incised, painted, or printed factory marks and pattern numbers on the base, many early pieces remain unlabelled.

Display the jug as an accent piece on a sideboard top, mantelpiece, or inside a glass-fronted display cabinet. It can also be repurposed as a floral vase on a dining table or console to add historical contrast to contemporary decor.
