Antique Georgian Solid Silver Cigar/cheroot Case Engine Turned - Edward Edwards 1836

18th century
For Sale by Artisan Antiques
Description

We are delighted to offer this chic Georgian solid silver cigar/cheroot case made in London 1836, with marks for Edward Edwards.

Made slightly earlier than typical early Victorian cigar cases, this case features classical Georgian characteristics. Its quality and gauge are superb and a cut above the rest of what one may usually expect from later-period cheroot cases.

Crafted from a thick gauge of silver, the case has a very satisfying and reassuring feel in hand with a heavy lid and secure closure. Its quality is equally matched by a timeless engine-turned motif that embellishes the case throughout, leaving space for only modest yet impactful decorations.

The top features a small round cartouche with a monogram hand-engraved and our favourite highlight point on the case: a fabulous quality thumbpiece right by the lid to aid with opening. The thumbpiece is applied cast silver, which has then been meticulously hand-chased with floral and foliate motifs, similar to what one would find on a snuff box, but contouring to the curved edge.

Such a small yet brilliant decoration to what may otherwise be a simple utilitarian feature/object reflects a 'no-cost cut' attitude and the fine craftsmanship of the era.

Whether it be a wonderful collectable object of vertu or a practical case for the discerning individual, it is bound to be a conversation starter and the perfect accoutrement for the distinguished collector. Additionally, with some creative uses, it may also be used to hold some small sweets, objects or medicine in the modern day.

A full set of English hallmarks is present on the inner 'lip' of the case.

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Pocket cigar and cheroot cases became prevalent accessories in nineteenth-century Europe following the widespread adoption of imported tobacco. Craftspeople produced these cases in precious metals, often incorporating engine turning and engraved crests to denote personal ownership and social standing.

These cases were typically constructed from sterling silver, formed into two hinged or push-fit sections designed to protect contents from damage. Surface decoration relied on lathe-operated engine turning for geometric patterns, alongside hand-chased borders and applied relief castings.

Authenticity is verified by official hallmarks stamped into the silver, which include the makers mark, purity mark, town mark, duty mark, and date letter. Georgian and William IV pieces will feature the sovereigns profile duty mark along with standard sterling silver indicators.

Designers style antique silver cases as decorative objects on an office desk, coffee table tray, or inside a glass display cabinet. They add texture and historic detail when paired with leather-bound books, dark timber surfaces, or brass desk instruments.

Preserve sterling silver by wiping it gently with a soft microfibre cloth and applying specialized, non-abrasive silver polish sparingly to remove oxidisation. Avoid submerging constructed pieces in water to protect interior linings, and store items in tarnish-resistant cloth bags.
