Chinese Pao Tao Carpet

1900 - 1920
Description

This Chinese carpet is in good condition with a good wool pile all over.  Some old marks and minimal stains are visible, we have professionally washed this carpet and the majority of the old marks were removed.  With only a few still visible.  The background dye is an sandy biscuit tone and full of various blue shades.  The central looking through a window design is delightful and the detail in the border and water scenes are very beautiful.

Pao Tao carpets are hand-knotted rugs from China with a long history.  The tradition of hand-knotted rugs in China dates back thousands of years. The first written references to Chinese carpets appear in the Tang Dynasty (618–907), and historian Pan Ku (A.D. 32–92) mentions their production as early as the first century A.D.

Originally knotted for the imperial court and their feature motifs were from porcelain paintings, such as dragons, birds, and floral patterns.  Chinese carpets have always favoured the blue and white colour palette such as this Pao Tao carpet.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Originating from Northern China and Inner Mongolia during the late 19th and early 20th centuries, Baotou carpets are recognised for their pictorial designs, often depicting landscapes, flora, and architectural elements using natural indigo dyes.

These carpets were typically hand-knotted using hand-spun sheep wool pile woven onto a durable cotton warp and weft foundation, coloured with vegetable and mineral dyes.

Authentic pieces exhibit subtle colour variations known as abrash, asymmetrical hand-knotted pile, pictorial landscape scenes, and traditional indigo blue or warm beige palettes.

A pictorial carpet serves as a focal point in modern or classic rooms, anchoring seating areas or study spaces with quiet blue and beige tones.

Vacuum regularly using a suction-only setting without a rotating beat bar, rotate periodically to equalize wear, and employ professional specialist cleaning for stains.
