A black Morocco leather despatch box by Wickwar & Co., Poland Street, dating to the late 1800s. The bevelled tooled top is stamped ‘Lauce A. Waldron, Marino, Killiney, Co. Dublin.’ As can be seen in the photos, the box is in very good condition given its age and use. The box is fitted with a Bramah lock and working key. The key does not appear to be the original, but it does work as it should. The box measures 46 cm wide, 30.3 cm deep, and 15.5 cm in height.
Laurence Ambrose Waldron (1858-1923) was a patron of the arts, stockbroker, and MP representing the Irish Parliamentary Party for Dublin St. Stephen’s Green. He was also a member of the Irish Privy Council. His sumptuous house, Merino, is now the Australian Ambassador’s residence.
