Description

A Fine Burr Walnut Cocktail Cabinet on Cabriole Legs

Item Code: LC1396

Description

A highly attractive early 20th century burr walnut cocktail cabinet, English, dating to circa 1925–1935. The cabinet is beautifully veneered in richly figured burr walnut, arranged in a striking book-matched pattern across the doors and sides, and framed by fine moulded edges.

The cabinet stands on elegant cabriole legs, each finely carved with scrolling foliage and shell motifs, united by a shaped and carved apron of particularly good quality. The doors open to reveal a well-fitted interior, incorporating a mirrored back, bottle divisions, and a small drawer, all finished in contrasting light wood, typical of high-quality cocktail cabinets of the period.

Original brass fittings and decorative corner mounts enhance the exterior, while the overall proportions make this piece both practical and visually impressive. The cabinet is well presented with excellent colour and polish, and would serve equally well in a traditional or contemporary interior.

A refined and decorative cocktail cabinet, combining craftsmanship, function, and strong visual appeal.

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A cocktail cabinet is a dedicated piece of storage furniture designed for housing spirits, wine, glassware, and mixing equipment. These cabinets gained widespread popularity during the 1920s and 1930s with the rise of modern home entertaining and cocktail culture.

Traditional cocktail cabinets frequently feature figurative timber veneers such as burr walnut, mahogany, or maple, mounted over solid hardwood frames. Interiors often incorporate mirror-lined backs, glass shelving, and solid brass hinges or escutcheons.

Authentic pieces exhibit distinctive symmetrical book-matched grain patterns created from natural walnut burl growth. Examination of joinery shows dovetail construction on interior drawers, period-accurate brass hardware, and legitimate patination along wear areas.

Position the cabinet against a focal wall in a dining room, living area, or reception room to serve as a functional bar station. Pair the wooden tones with contemporary artwork or metallic accessories to create visual balance between traditional craftsmanship and modern design.

Dust the surface regularly with a soft, lint-free cloth and apply high-grade beeswax polish once or twice a year to nourish the wood. Protect the veneer from liquid spills, heat, and direct sunlight, which can alter the natural colour finish.
