19th century
Description

Royal House Antiques is delighted to offer for sale this absolutely stunning, French Louis XIII Revival heavily carved cabinet with inset Marble plaques

Please note the delivery fee listed is just a guide, it covers within the M25 only for the UK and local Europe only for international, if you would like an accurate quote please send me your postcode and I’ll provide you with the exact price

I also have the matching, extending dining table with ten chairs and large display cabinet listed under my other items

What a find, this piece is important, decorative and looks sublime in any setting, the original versions of these were made in Paris Circa 1610-1620, they were usually commissioned for grand castles and were quite gigantic, some topping four meters tall, this piece thankfully is a Revival example which dates to the mid 1800's Circa 1860, by that time city life had overtaken those grand country estates and cabinet makers were producing more practical pieces

As you can see this cabinet is heavily carved all over, it has a Renaissance looking Maiden to the very top followed by reclining nudes in a forest garden setting, there are Eagles, Swans, Neoclassical Maidens, this piece has it, this is pure art furniture from every angle

The small right door has a full length lock and the original key, this lock is exceptionally strong, the left door is a massive one piece hand carved slab of timber, they both open to reveal a very ample storage area

Condition wise we have deep cleaned, hand condition waxed and hand polished it from top to bottom, there will be age and use related patina marks here and there, mostly its in very fine order

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

The Louis XIII Revival style emerged during the nineteenth century, drawing inspiration from early seventeenth-century French furniture. Key characteristics include geometric mouldings, heavy turned columns, bold bun feet, and relief carvings depicting classical figures or mythological themes.

Pieces from this era are typically constructed from dense hardwoods, with French walnut being a preferred choice for intricate carving. Decorative accents often incorporate inset marble panels, brass fittings, and structural turned elements.

Authentic nineteenth-century revival pieces display hand-carved details with subtle variations, hand-cut dovetail joinery in internal drawers, and natural age-related shrinkage in timber backboards. Inset marble panels should show smooth edge bevels and historical patina.

A substantial carved cabinet functions as a focal piece when placed against a neutral wall in a hallway, dining space, or reception room. Pair it with clean-lined modern art or minimalist ceramics to create a contrast between contemporary and historical textures.

Dust the timber regularly with a soft lint-free cloth and apply high-grade beeswax once or twice a year to preserve the wood moisture. Clean the marble elements with a pH-neutral cleaner, avoiding acidic substances that could etch the natural stone surface.
