Archival Detail
Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A French Belle Epoque toleware washstand is a late 19th to early 20th-century piece of functional furniture crafted from painted or japanned sheet metal. Designed for personal hygiene prior to indoor plumbing, these stands typically enclose a ceramic washbasin and mirror within a compact cabinet.

Toleware furniture was primarily constructed from rolled sheet iron or tinware that was lacquered or hand-painted with decorative enamel finishes. Components such as washbasins were made of glazed ceramic, accompanied by glass mirrors and brass or iron fittings.

Authentic pieces exhibit hand-applied enamel paintwork featuring botanical or classical motifs, visible seam welding, and age-appropriate paint crazing or metal oxidisation. Original items feature tailored apertures designed to fit specific ceramic bowls and folding mirror mechanisms.

An antique washstand can be positioned in a guest cloakroom, hallway, or bedroom corner to serve as a distinctive decorative feature. The interior storage compartment can be utilized for linens or toiletries, while the open top displays floral arrangements.

Dust the surface regularly with a soft, dry microfibre cloth to prevent scratch marks. Avoid applying liquid polish, abrasive cleaners, or water directly onto painted surfaces, as moisture can penetrate paint chips and induce oxidisation.
