Pair of Carey 12-Inch Terrestrial & Celestial Floor Globes

Description

Dated 1816 and later. A pair of Carey’s 12-inch terrestrial and celestial floor globes on later stands, each with 12 gores meridian rings and brass horizontal rings, the celestial globes cartouche inscribed Carey’s new celestial globe on which 3500 stars selected from the most accurate observations and calculated for the year 1800. Made and sold by ‘JW Carey, The Strand, London’ dated January 1st 1816. The terrestrial globe's cartouche is inscribed ‘Carey’s new terrestrial globe, from the best authorities, made in London by G & J Carey, 86 St James Street, January 4th 1844’. Both resting on later mahogany stands with umbrella-style tripod bases.

Floor globes gained prominence during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, serving as both navigational study tools and symbols of erudition in private libraries. Terrestrial globes mapped the surface of the Earth, while celestial globes depicted the stars and constellations.

The globe spheres were typically constructed from plaster or papier-mache, covered with printed paper gores that were hand-coloured and varnished. The stands were made from fine cabinet woods such as mahogany, equipped with calibrated brass meridian rings.

Authentic pieces feature engraved copperplate paper gores showing period cartographic knowledge, engraved cartouches with the makers name, hand-turned timber stands, and cast brass hardware displaying natural patination and hand-drawn graduations.
