A superb quality Victorian velvet and silk jewellery casket or small sewing box housed in a stunning embossed wirework sterling silver frame. A beautifully detailed art nouveau design of coiling, twining flowering vines, sandwiched between ornate rope twist and floral friezes, and set on a flat crimped foot. An oval cartouche is set into the front. The hinged lid has a large domed pin cushion, and the box is lined with silk. Hallmarked for Birmingham 1888, maker E S Barnsley & Co (Edward Souter Barnsley).
It measures 12.7cm (5'') wide by 9.5cm (3 3/4'') deep and 7.5cm (3'') high. The inside space is 10.2cm (4'') by 7cm (2 3/4'') and 3.5cm (1 3/8'') high.
A perfect size for rings, earrings and chains, or a useful box for sewing essentials or storage of other trinkets.
In excellent condition with no damage, losses or repairs to the silver. The velvet and silk have been professionally re-covered clearly relatively recently, along with the base being finished in a matching leat
...her, and all are in lovely clean condition. The silver sleeve can be carefully slid off to allow easy maintenance.
