Antique Oak Low Side Table

18th century
Description

A gloriously wonky mid 18th century oak side table, with turned legs and a plank top. This little table has lots of character and to me is utterly charming. It would be ideal as a low table next to an armchair or sofa, or maybe as a coffee table.

Condition: The table is not in any way level or square, but that is all part of it's charm! The top has a replacement piece on one side - please see the photos - and there a couple of holes in it, with gaps between the three planks. The top has various marks and signs of wear. There are a few old woodworm holes here and there - we have treated it as a precaution. There is wear to the feet. The table is sturdy and surprisingly heavy, and is a fully useable piece of furniture.

Mainland UK delivery (excluding the Scottish highlands) is included in the price - if you would like a quote for delivery elsewhere, or if you would like to collect the item yourself, please get in touch. Delivery of furniture usually takes between 7 and 21 days from order, though can sometimes take longer. If you need an item by a certain date please speak to us prior to ordering and we’ll try to help.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Seventeenth-century style oak tables typically feature mortise and tenon joinery, sturdy box stretchers, and turned legs. Designed for utility and durability, these pieces reflect early English country and Jacobean furniture traditions.

Antique oak tables were constructed using solid native oak planks joined with wooden dowels or pegs rather than metal fasteners. Frame elements feature hand-turned legs supported by perimeter floor stretchers for structural stability.

Authentic antique oak displays uneven wear around the lower stretchers where feet rested, hand-planed top boards, and natural shrinkage across the grain. Pegged mortise-and-tenon joints often protrude slightly due to the timber drying unevenly over long periods.

A low oak table functions effectively as an occasional side table beside a tailored sofa or as a compact coffee table in a modern living space. The dark timber patination provides grounded visual weight alongside contemporary upholstery and neutral textiles.

Maintain the timber finish by applying a beeswax paste once or twice a year using a soft lint-free cloth. Keep the piece away from direct heat sources and radiators to prevent timber shrinkage or splitting.
