Antique Victorian Gillows Rosewood Credenza Sideboard – Serpentine Marble Top
Status:This item has been sold Sold by:Knight Fine Antiques and Collectables
A Victorian rosewood credenza of serpentine form, circa 1874, attributed to Gillows of Lancaster. The top is inset with a white Italian Carrara marble slab, veined in grey. The central cupboard door is overlaid with intricate fretwork framed by moulded borders, flanked to each side by fabric-backed fretwork panels. Carved uprights of slightly arched form flank the central door, visually framing it before the serpentine front sweeps outward. Both the base and the lower edge of the frieze are finished with the same carved moulding that frames the fretwork on the doors, creating a cohesive decorative scheme. The richly figured rosewood veneers display fine colour and grain.
The interior, accessed by a working lock and key, is fitted with a single shelf spanning the width of the cupboard. The piece bears the stamped number “1802” on the top of the central door and also on the surface of the credenza beneath the marble top. According to Gillows’ system of design and stock numbers, this c...orresponds to a date of manufacture in 1874.
Originally conceived as a sideboard or credenza for the display and storage of dining plate and accoutrements, this piece equally lends itself to modern use as a statement console, storage cabinet, or focal point in a dining room, hall, or study.
