Nantgarw Porcelain Plate. Circa 1818-1820

Description

For offer is an exquisite Nantagrw Porcelain Plate.

Circa 1818-1820,

The plate is beautifully decorated with a centred full flower spray that includes an open pink rose. The border is typically moulded with c-scrolls, forget-me-knots and tied ribbons which is unusually picked out in gold, six small rose sprigs to the border.

The plate is impressed Nant Garw Cw to base.

The Provenance is from a private collection in Surrey. UK.

"Nantgarw Porcelain is unique in that it is a bone ash/frit based soft-paste porcelain body which no other porcelain can come close to in translucency or whiteness. Furthermore, the glaze on Nantgarw porcelain is the perfect complement to enamelled decoration giving the colours true vibrancy and allowing the decoration to merge into the glaze."

This stuning plate is in excellent condition with no chips, cracks or restoration and the gilding and decoration is fresh. A fine example of this beautiful and collectable porcelain.

Founded in Wales in 1813 by William Billingsley, Nantgarw is renowned for producing some of the finest soft-paste porcelain of the Regency era, famed for its translucency and delicate hand-painted floral decoration before production ceased in the 1820s.

Regency porcelain plates were typically crafted from a glassy soft-paste porcelain body fired at lower temperatures, then embellished with overglaze enamel painting and hand-burnished gold leaf gilding along sculpted borders.

Authentic pieces often exhibit high translucency when held to light, subtle firing flaws in the glaze, distinctive botanical enamelling characteristic of Billingsleys school, and impressed maker marks such as NANT-GARW C.W. beneath the base.
