Rare Doulton Slaters Vase C.1905

1900 - 1920
For Sale by DLS Antiques
Description

For offer is a rare Antique Doulton Slaters Vase in dark blue and gilt with pale blue stylised roses on a gilt and brown banding, dating from around 1905.

Manufactued in salt glaze art stoneware from the early 20th Century with the Chine Ware design from the Doulton Slater Period.

"The distinctive feature of Chine Ware is a textured netted background surface obtained by pressing moistened pieces of old point lace linen and other fabrics into the soft clay soon after the pots had come to the wheel." (' The Doulton Lambeth Wares', page 177, Louise Irvine)

'Royal Doulton England' and partial 'Doulton Slaters Patent' impressed backstamps on base plus the number 5562.

It also has the initials Eb impressed which is possibly Ethel Beard (1890-1930) a Doulton Ware Assistant.

In excellent condition with no cracks or restoration. For accuracy there is a miniscule 2 millimeter imperfection on rim as photographed but difficult to spot and some light gilt wear.

A quite striking vase

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Doulton Slaters Patent stoneware refers to a decorative ceramic technique developed in the late 19th century at the Doulton Lambeth pottery in London. It involves pressing real lace fabric into uncured clay to create a textured pattern, which is subsequently gilded and hand-painted with coloured enamels.

These ceramic vessels were crafted from durable stoneware clay, fired at elevated temperatures, and finished with metallic gilding, enamel paints, and rich cobalt glazes.

Authentic pieces feature impressed factory marks on the base, including the Royal Doulton or Doulton Lambeth stamp, the Doulton & Slaters Patent mark, and specific painter or decorator initials.

Display the vase as a single accent piece on a sideboard, mantelpiece, or open shelf where directional lighting highlights its textured lace surface and cobalt glaze.

Dust gently with a dry, soft microfibre cloth. Avoid chemical cleaners, immersion in water, or abrasive materials, as these can strip the surface gilding and delicate hand-painted enamels.
