Fowey River Antiques has dated this piece to the 1870s.
It has the most stunning and unusual gilt decoration which depicts a fox cunningly chasing a chicken up a ladder but being warned off by a large rooster perched upon the thatched roof of a chicken coop. There is a large ivy leaf branch to one side and smaller one to the other. The feet are made to look like large stones and it has wheat sheafs above the bezel. The case is made of white alabaster which compliments the gilt decoration beautifully.
It stands on its original base which has also been gilded and retains its original claret coloured velvet cover.
The French movement is of course fully marked with the Japy Freres gold medal winning stamp. It runs for a full 8 days and keeps excellent time chiming on the hours and half hours on a small tuned bell.
It comes with its original pendulum and both its winding and small adjustment keys.
The movement is in excellent clean and running condition having just been fully serviced by Alan Williams FBHI of Plymouth Clocks who is a Fellow of the British Horological Institute and comes with a 12 month warranty.
A most stunning and highly unusual clock and a must for anyone with an interest in chickens or foxes!
Dimensions of clock: Height 16.5" Width is 10" Depth 6" when placed on its base, without the base it stands at 14.5" high, 8.5" wide and 5" deep. The diameter of the dial is 4".
