In A Nutshell Antiques and Interiors has dated this piece to the Victorian era.
Inside, the box is fitted with a maroon leather writing surface with a gilt tooled edge.
There is a secret compartment with 3 small hidden drawers below the leather surface that springs open by lifting a piece of wood next to the inkwell.
The box is in very good condition for its age with a beautiful patina. The leather writing surface is in good condition with some minor wear along the crease. There are some minor old knocks and marks around the outside of the box and some small shrinkage splits but nothing detrimental and overall it displays beautifully.
