Rowland Henry Hill was a British painter associated with the Staithes Group, a celebrated colony of Northern Impressionists working along the North Yorkshire coast in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The group was known for its free, spontaneous brushwork, plein-air methods, and honest depictions of rural and coastal life.
 
Hill painted extensively around Whitby, Robin Hood’s Bay, Runswick Bay, Hutton-le-Hole, and the inland villages of the North York Moors. His work combines impressionistic colour with a loose, expressive handling of watercolour, often capturing movement, atmosphere and natural light with great immediacy.
 
By the 1940s—when this painting was completed—Hill had refined a more fluid, gestural style. His later works are increasingly sought after for their freshness and sense of place. Pieces dep...
