Early Georgian Mahogany Tilt-top Table With Birdcage Mechanism, C.1740

Status: This item has been sold
Sold by: Salisbury Antiques Centre

A good early Georgian mahogany occasional table featuring a classic tilt-top and birdcage mechanism, allowing the circular top to both tip and rotate—an early 18th-century innovation associated with quality tripod tables. The well-figured single-piece mahogany top sits above the original birdcage frame with its turned supports and working catch.

Raised on a elegantly turned column with barley-twist carving to the lower section, the table stands on three well-shaped cabriole legs terminating in pad feet, showing fine early proportions and wear commensurate with age.

A genuine early example with untouched surface, lovely colour, and the desirable early tripod stance.
