Late 19th-century Scratch-built Ketch-rigged Pond Yacht with Carvel Hull, C.1890

19th century
Description

A large and impressive late 19th-century scratch-built model of a ketch-rigged racing yacht, complete with its full complement of original canvas sails. Beautifully constructed, the hull is finely ribbed and planked in the carvel manner, with a planked deck and a lead keel set into the underside for stability.

The craftsmanship is notable, with individually pinned strakes, shaped bow and stern sections, and turned wooden masts with period rigging rings and fittings. The deck features a raised hatch and carefully detailed bulwarks, while the elegant sheer and sweeping bow suggest the lines of a fast Victorian racing yacht.

Structurally sound and retaining an excellent patina throughout, this is a superb decorative and maritime piece with real presence.

Circa 1890

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Victorian pond yachts were detailed, functional scale model sailing vessels crafted for competitive racing or leisure on urban boating lakes during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries.

These models were typically constructed using carved solid wood or planked carvel hulls made from pine or mahogany, fitted with brass deck fittings, linen or cotton canvas sails, and lead-weighted keels.

Authentic period pieces feature hand-carved or plank-on-frame hulls, hand-stitched cotton sails with natural age patination, period brass or copper hardware, and evidence of genuine water-use wear on the keel.

Displaying a model yacht on a sideboard, mantelpiece, or deep shelf adds architectural height and texture, complementing both coastal retreats and classic library settings.

Keep the vessel away from direct sunlight and damp environments to prevent timber warping and sail discoloration; dust gently with a soft dry brush, avoiding liquid cleaners on aged textiles.
