18th Century Georgian Mahogany Small Bowfront Sideboard

18th century
Description

An Extremely Good Quality Late 18th Century, George III Period, Mahogany Bowfronted Sideboard, Of Elegant Relative Small Proportions, The Well Figured Top Over Three Drawers To Frieze, With Replacement Oval Plate Brass Handles And Fine Satinwood Banding Throughout, Raised On Elegant Square Tapered Legs With Original Spade Feet.

This is a really lovely and practical 18th century, georgian sideboard, which is the absolute perfect size in terms of being big enough to be extremely functional and useful, whilst at the same time not being overpoweringly long and deep in a room, as is often the case for by far the majority of georgian sideboards which you will find for sale.

Overall it retains a very good colour and although the top has various old marks, scuffs and scrapes they are very much consumate with the age of a piece which has spent over 200 years of its life being heavily used. Indeed it’s amazing to think that it is very much as fit for purpose today, as it was the day that it was made. The elegant brass handles are later replacements but very much of the style which would have been in place originally so sit extremely well on the piece and the satinwood banded decoration is also a nice touch.

As with all our items this sideboard has been attended to in our worksops by our highly trained, skilled, traditional antique furniture restorers, before being offered for sale, meaning it has received any work required to ensure it is ready to place straight into the home, including a natural wax polish.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Georgian bowfront sideboards typically feature a gently curved convex front, fine mahogany veneers, crossbanded inlay, and slender tapered legs designed for formal dining spaces.

Craftsmen primarily utilised solid mahogany and mahogany veneers, often incorporating decorative satinwood or boxwood stringing and cast brass oval drawer pulls.

Authentic pieces often display hand-cut dovetail drawer joints, oak or pine secondary drawer linings, natural wood shrinkage on large panels, and period-appropriate hand-cast brass hardware.

A bowfront sideboard functions effectively as an entryway console or dining room server, balanced by a contemporary mirror overhead and minimalist decorative objects.

Keep the woodwork away from direct heat sources and sunlight, dust regularly with a soft dry cloth, and apply a high-quality beeswax polish annually to preserve the timber finish.
