A beautiful antique Ferahan rug, handwoven circa 1900 with an allover Herati design on a midnight blue field and lighter indigo border. Finely woven with lovely wool quality and great secondary colours, especially the soft gold in the corner spandrels

This rug is in good condition with light, age-related wear, slightly heavier in places. Fringes and selvedges are secure and it has been professionally cleaned.

Originating from the Arak region in central Persia during the nineteenth century, Ferahan rugs are distinguished by their fine asymmetrical weave, dark blue or indigo fields, and dense Herati floral patterns.

These rugs were hand-knotted using high-grade hand-spun wool for the pile, bound onto a durable cotton warp and weft foundation coloured with natural plant and mineral dyes.

Authenticity can be verified by examining the back of the rug for irregular hand-knotted construction, soft colour variations known as abrash, and natural cotton foundation threads.
