Pair of Burmese High-grade Silver Bowls, Mandalay, C.1900

1900 - 1920
Description

A finely worked pair of Burmese silver bowls on spreading feet, probably Mandalay, around 1900. Each bowl is richly decorated in repousse and chased work with dense sprays of flowers and foliage, framed by bead borders and a band of tiny petals around the rim. One bowl shows a female figure carrying a basket on her head, the other a male figure accompanied by birds – clearly conceived as a complementary pair rather than two identical pieces.

The interiors were originally fire-gilded; traces of the original gilding survive in the recesses of the decoration and around the centre. The silver has been tested and shows a fineness above 900, which is entirely in keeping with traditional Burmese workshop practice at the turn of the century.

Both bowls are in excellent antique condition, with no dents, splits, repairs or distortions to the rims or feet. Only normal age-related surface wear and the expected uneven remains of the interior gilding are visible. The repoussé work remains crisp, with a good play of light across the relief, and the pair displays very well.

A substantial and decorative pair of high-grade Burmese silver bowls, suitable for a serious collection of Asian silver or as striking tabletop pieces in a refined interior.

Dimensions: height 7.8 cm; diameter 12.7 cm; combined weight 226.15 g (tested silver of at least 900 fineness).

Please study the accompanying photographs carefully as they form an integral part of this description. If you have any questions, we will be happy to answer them. The item will be shipped with full tracking and insurance. It is important to note that shipping costs include labour, packaging and postage.
