19th Century English Regency Mahogany Serving Table

19th century
Description

19th Century English Regency Mahogany Serving Table

An English Regency Period Mahogany Serving Table with a Raised Back.

This interesting table has a raised triangular back. The mahogany has a rich colour, the bookmatched veneers on the back are beautifully figured. There is a carved moulding under the top and there is a concealed central drawer in the frieze.

The table stands on four turned legs, the front pair terminating in overscale carved paws in the manner of the designs published by George Smith. Paw feet are something of a hallmark of Irish furniture but it seems likely that this piece is English.

A very impressive table in life. Quality timbers used throughout and the oversized paws are outstanding!

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

English Regency serving tables, produced between 1811 and 1830, reflect neoclassical architectural influences with symmetrical proportions, turned legs, and decorative wood veneers. They were designed as auxiliary surfaces in formal dining rooms for serving food and displaying tableware.

Cabinetmakers during the Regency period primarily utilised imported West Indian mahogany, frequently applying flame mahogany veneers over oak or pine timber carcasses. Accent details included brass fittings, gadrooned borders, and hand-carved lion paw feet.

Authentic Regency pieces exhibit hand-planed drawer linings, hand-cut dovetail joinery, and natural shrinkage marks in the timber over time. Original carved elements, such as paw feet, should display consistent surface patination and wear appropriate to age.

A Regency serving table functions effectively as an entrance hall console, a living room sideboard, or a focal surface behind a sofa. Pairing dark mahogany timber with modern wall colours creates balance and visual contrast in modern spaces.

Clean mahogany surfaces with a soft microfibre cloth and apply natural beeswax polish once or twice annually along the grain. Position the furniture away from direct heat sources and direct sunlight to prevent veneer movement or timber shrinkage.
