Exceptionally Fine Japanese Satsuma Vase- Keizan For Kinkozan
£7,850 $10,721 €9,036
As part of our Japanese works of art collection we are delighted to offer this exceptionally well painted Meiji Period (1868-1912), Satsuma vase from the highly regarded Kinkozan studios, on this occasion artist signed by Keizan, a retained Kinkozan studio artist. This complex shaped vase is predominantly decorated in cobalt blue adorned with lavish gilt fauna, instantly recognisable as a work from the higher echelons of the Kinkozan studios. The neck of the bulbous potted body gives rise to an extravegant flared rim housing a moulded collar surmounted with mythical beast, the collar decorated with geometric diaper patterns. The main heart shaped panels of the vase are decorated to an extraordinary standard of workmanship, the first panel depicts cockerels and hens in a waterside garden scene surrounded with an abundance of bamboo and other native flora, the opposing panel plays out a Hanami ( cherry blossom ) celebration, presumably within a park in Kyoto, this panel displays dozens o...f lavishly dressed Japanese folk simply enjoying a special day in the park, some can be seen seated just viewing the blossom, others milling about or taking tea at vendors stalls, the painting of the Sakura is quite outstanding, each panel a masterclass of Satsuma decoration.
Literature :
The underside of the vase is sealed with a Kinkozan studio mark as well as painted with an enchanting open book floral scene, the pages housing the signature of the painter, ''Keizan Ga'' Kobayashi Keizan and ''Dai Nihon Kyoto Awata, Kinkozan seizo'' (Manufactured by Kinkozan, Awata district, Kyoto, Great Japan).
