A Flight, Barr and Barr Worcester 'Warwick' Vase Decorated by Thomas Lowe C.1815-20

19th century
Description

A Flight, Barr and Barr Worcester Porcelain 'Warwick' vase, c.1815-20. Finely painted by Thomas Lowe, of classic campana form with double entwined and gilded handles, raised on a square foot, the rim with egg and dart moulding, painted on both sides with a figural panel, one depicting the 'Maid of Orleans', the other 'Ferdinand and Miranda', the deep blue ground with very intricate gold tracery and anthemion borders.

Impressed crowned FBB mark and full script mark including Coventry St address, the panels titled in similar script

The panels are close to the hand of Thomas Baxter. After his departure, Baxter wrote to a friend mentioning that the figure painting at Flights 'is now done by a pupil of mine named Lowe'. Thomas Lowe had been a pupil at Baxter's china painting school in Worcester and, according to Solomon Cole, Lowe went on to 'higher branches of their art afterwards'.

"The Maid of Orléans" is another name for Joan of Arc, a national heroine of France who led the French army to victory during the Hundred Years' War. She was given this title after lifting the English siege of Orléans in 1429. The panel titled ''The Maid of Orléans" shows Joan of Arc where she conjures daemons in Shakespeare Henry VI part 1. But the daemons are uncompliant, the one on the left hangs his head. Engraving C Warren 1805 after a drawing by J Thurston.

Condition: Excellent with no damage or restoration

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Produced during the early nineteenth century under firms such as Flight, Barr and Barr, Regency Worcester porcelain is characterised by soft-paste or bone china bodies, deep cobalt blue ground colours, ornate gilding, and hand-painted panels.

These vessels were slip-cast or hand-moulded using bone china formulations, fired, glazed, and subsequently decorated with enamel paint and honey gilding before low-temperature kiln firings bound the pigments.

Authentic pieces frequently bear impressed marks such as FBB beneath a crown, printed or handwritten factory marks on the underside, detailed tooling within the gilding, and hand-painted miniature panels.

A Regency porcelain urn serves as a focal decorative accent when positioned on a mantelpiece, sideboard, or console table, offering historical contrast to modern architecture.

Dust the surface using a soft brush or dry microfibre cloth, avoiding water immersion, cleaning chemical solutions, or abrasive materials that could erode the gilded detailing and surface enamel.
