A Flight, Barr & Barr Worcester Porcelain Teacup & Saucer Decorated by Samuel Astles

19th century
Description

A Flight, Barr & Barr Worcester Porcelain Teacup & Saucer decorated by Samuel Astles c.1816. The low waisted cup, with solid gilt external gadrooned rim, superbly decorated with panels edged in raised gold containing finely painted flowers and coloured butterflies against a pale yellow background and reserved on an apple-green ground, the same pattern repeated on the saucer.

This is the pattern used on the breakfast service made for Princess Charlotte in 1816 to celebrate the marriage of Princess Charlotte Augusta of Wales to Leopold of Saxe-Coburg-Saalfeld, later King Leopold I of Belgium, which took place in London on 2 May 2016. Charlotte was the only child of the future King George IV, but sadly died in childbirth on 6 November 1817. A plate is Illustrated and discussed by Charles Dawson, Worcester Flight & Barr Porcelain (2023), p.173, fig.17.8.

Marked in red script to the base of the teacup and in gold to the base of the saucer with full factory mark referring to the Coventry Street address.

Note that the gold factory mark was only used on the very best pieces of porcelain.

Condition: Excellent

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Flight, Barr & Barr refers to the operational period of the Worcester porcelain factory between 1813 and 1840. Production during this era is distinguished by fine bone china, elaborate gilding, and hand-painted decoration inspired by botanical and classical themes.

Regency teacups were crafted from soft-paste porcelain or bone china, fired at high temperatures, and finished with rich ground glazes. Decorative elements were hand-painted using enamel pigments before being accented with mercury gilding and burnished with agate.

Authentic pieces often feature impressed factory marks such as FBB beneath a crown, or script marks detailing the London workshop address. Additionally, high-grade burnished gilding and multi-layered enamel painting are characteristic indicators of manufacture from this period.

Small porcelain items are frequently styled within glazed display cabinets, arranged along mantelpieces, or positioned on open bookshelves to highlight detail while protecting the objects from accidental damage.

Clean gently using lukewarm water and a mild non-abrasive soap, avoiding prolonged soaking. Never wash antique gilt ceramics in a dishwasher, and store them away from direct sunlight and humidity fluctuations.
